Optimal Design of a Switched Reluctance Motor using the XFEM Method

A numerical approach based on the extended finite element method efficiency and level set method flexibility is proposed in the present paper for the shape optimization of a switched reluctance motor pole. Using the extended finite element method as an analysis tool, an unstructured and non-conform mesh to the moving interfaces is generated only once, at the beginning of the optimization process, which is done with the Genetic Algorithm. The main advantage of this approach, in comparison with the classical FEM as analysis tool, is that provides efficient, accurate and much faster computation schemes.
